A Little Bit About Me, Charmaine

A Little Bit About Me, Charmaine

Charmaine Torma

I’ve dedicated my professional and personal life to promoting diversity, inclusion, equity, and access for ALL individuals. I’m a highly dedicated not-for-profit (NFP) specialist with over 20 years of experience working with organizations of all types, sizes, and operating budgets. My focus is to creatively help NFPs Get. It. Together. (#NFPgit).

My Exciting Adventure

In 2015, I embarked on an exciting (and scary) adventure, guiding organizations on how to GIT for their respective NFP. I provided consultative support in board governance, strategic planning, and all aspects of philanthropy. Prior to consulting, I served as the Vice President of College Relations at Holy Cross College in Notre Dame, Indiana while also serving as an adjunct development consultant for Catholic School Management, a firm providing comprehensive services in all areas of Catholic school life and operation (because a happy life is a busy one).

Jumping Back Into the Field

I’m an educator at heart, but sorely missed being a frontline philanthropic officer. So, in March 2020, I accepted a development position at SMASH, a national NFP providing an intensive and holistic STEM education to underserved high school and college students. Now, I’m able to demonstrate to NFP professionals that what I’m advising them to do, actually works. AND, when I try something and it doesn’t work, I can use my failures as a learning moment to bring about future successes (for myself and for other NFP professionals).

Helping Others

My family likes to say that I have a flair for the dramatics (maybe it’s because I consider myself a SLAP….Sri Lankan American Princess). However, I am not theatrically gifted, but I do love experiencing all aspects of art, especially the performed arts. After an evening of watching Improv in a Black Box Theatre, I was inspired to develop workshops and training programs that incorporate her expertise as a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) with black box theatre and improv techniques. These training sessions help to relax trainees while they actively learn how to Get. It. Together. (#NFPgit).

In my 20 plus year NFP career, I have worked with:

  • Advocacy organizations
  • K-12 schools
  • Higher Educational institutions
  • Mentoring and Scholarship organizations
  • Professional Membership associations
  • Religious organizations
  • Social Service organizations
  • Theatres

I’m available to train your team or speak at your next event. To learn more, feel free to reach out to me.

What People Say

“With Charmaine’s help, we’ve had a big impact on our campus in a relatively short amount of time. Charmaine knew what was needed and when. We’ve had great success in grant proposals and have been fortunate to be awarded every grant we’ve sought. With each decision made, we are careful about being ethical, thorough and transparent. I don’t know what we would have done without Charmaine’s expertise.” ~Barb Cassady, Director of Development, Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame
