Personal Reflection

What am I going to do with my Master’s in Education?

This fall, my graduate school, Upper Iowa University reached out to me about finishing up my Master’s in Education. I started the program while I was working at Saint Mary’s College because the College had a tuition reimbursement program. Once I left Saint Mary’s, I stopped the program, because I didn’t want to pay for the degree (I’m cheap, what can I say). Well, as you can imagine, UIU made me an offer that I could not refuse, so now I am juggling graduate courses until May 2018.

People keep asking me what I will do with this degree, and I have no clue. I ‘m enjoying what I’m learning. My current class we are talking about FERPA, tenure, and freedom of expression and how emerging technology fits into it. I love the discussions I’m having with my professor and peers. But, I still don’t know what I will do with the degree.

I love consulting and don’t see myself getting out of it so that I can work in academia. I could see myself focusing more on educational institutions and marketing my business to schools. I do enjoy teaching, and maybe I’ll occasionally teach at the college level. There are so many options and I haven’t decided on one, and even though I would like to know what I will do with the degree, the beauty of the situation is that I don’t need to know what I will do with it. Currently, I am enjoying learning and expanding my knowledge base, this semester it is all about case law and education.

If you have ideas on what I should do with the degree, let me know, but for now, I am just going to enjoy the learning process.

  1. Charmaine,
You are learning continuously. That’a the most important point. Think of what you’re gaining by discussions with classmates and professors. The masters also gives you a platform from which to launch your doctorate–if you choose to do so someday.

Hang the degree on a wall somewhere!

  2. Gene, thanks for the motivational words. I’m truly enjoying the discussion and what I’m learning. I’m continually stumped on how to answer the question, “What are you going to do with a Master’s in Education?”
